Club Culo Discoteca

club-culoAs much as I love queer partying in this town it can (after 10+ years) start to feel like the same night with the same white crowd over and over. Not so when queer cumbia comes to town. A night that has happened in spurts before is back with a Pride Edition reemergence that’s going to get the latin vibe back off the ground for real.

So bienvenidos a Club Culo, un reventon para maricones y tortilleras con DJs:

Queerlandia

queerlandia

Now in its 3rd (4th? I dunno, I’m getting old) year, Queerlandia is becoming the traditional kickoff for Portland Pride and also a reminder that Embers, the only gay bar still sporting prominent rainbows in a very visible area downtown, is still a thing. It’s a particularly great start because it features not only the club vibe dance party but also a craft fair, performances and 2 rooms to give you room to create the Pride that’s right for you.

Host Serendipity Jones will guide you through a stage that is bound to be energetic with performances from Carla Rossi + the Gays of Future Past and there are so many DJs you’ll be exhausted dancing (yeah on a Thursday) through the sets of:

Riff-Raff (Shade | Seattle’s Opulent Queer Empire)
Sappho (Turnt Up!/Chicken Strip/Hard Yes)
HOLD MY HAND (Bridge Club/Polari)
Orographic (Queerlandia/Bridge Club)
Huf N Stuf (Queerlandia/Bridge Club)

And in the chiller corner are caricatures by Tuna Doodle and goods to quench your local shopping thirst by Scrafts, Bang Bang Crafts and more.

And lest you forget that being gay wasn’t always (and still isn’t always) just a big party, it is also a benefit for Bradley Angle’s LGBTQ domestic violence services.

#NSFW

nsfwI gotta say a little piece of me died a little to learn that this year wouldn’t have a Pride Gaycation as I’ve been going to it for, I dunno, like 8 years or something? (Ask Mary, she has a better memory than me.) But I’m super stoked that it is actually not absent, just combined with one of the best newer parties, the amazing Thursday jam Laid Out, to make the super opener that is #NSFW. (What is it with the hashtag party names this year? I mean, if you were going to do a mashup why not just go with Gayed Out?)

To make sure everybody feels welcome, the promoters are keeping the cover to a low $5. This isn’t a party for a select few — they want to see everybody celebrating the beauty of collective pride.

The theme is “we just wanna party” (duh), it’s hosted by the irrepressible George Ray Babycakes and the killer DH lineup includes:

Bruce LaBruiser (Dirtbag)
KKost (Pony / Seattle)
MistiMiler(Laid Out)
Mr. Charming (Gaycation!)
Gossip Cat (Laid Out/ Bridge Club)

It is but a meager 5 bucks and since it promises both sex and LULZ, I’m totes there.

T*Party Picnic

tpartySo every year after I recover a little from PDX Pride I head down to the Bay for their own cray cray gay high holiday. And my favorite part is always just hanging out in Delores park with hundreds of other queers and feeling the love. The T*Party picnic, now in its 8th year (can you believe it?!) is our own version of that.

Taking over Overlook Park Friday afternoon it is a free and open space for friends, family, pets and everyone celebrating “genderqueers, dragsters, genderdeviants, trans people of all stripes, and those who are busily defying the gender binary” to get together and eat anything you can stick on a grill.

Plus plenty of discussions about what you’ll be doing later in the night and throughout the weekend so the perfect spot to meet up with all your pals and loosely plan it out, scope out all the people you want to dance with later…

Grills, food and drinks will be provided! Please bring additional food and drinks to share. The organizers are committed to reducing waste/garbage (this is the PacNW after all) so please help ‘em out by bringing your own silverware, plates, and cups!

Blow Pony’s Queer Mutiny with Ssion

ssionThe irrepressible Blow Pony is back for a 7th year of queerupting Pride. Starting as GAY BASH back in 2007 BP is always crazy, controversial and boundary pushing. You can expect a lot of QUEER diversity, dancing, bonding, history, and unity on the dual dance floors. Homo Gogos, DJs Airick, Stormy, Kasio Smashio, Jenns Irish, and most of all headliner musical performance art queerdos Ssion.

But wait, the bill just keeps getting better and better with additions musical mavens Glitterbang and performance art and drag fiercers Double Duchess who last year had the energy to turn it out late into the night Saturday in San Francisco (which I saw in person) and turn around for Seattle’s Sunday fun (which I saw videos of as I lay hungover on Market Street concrete). Now that, my babies, is Pride dedication.

Dyke March

Drag Mansion at the 2011 Dyke March. Photo by Alley Hector.

The constant refrain of “Where is the Dyke March” and “Is it happening?” are no less present this year BUT it IS happening. It’s at the usual gather time of 6PM It’s at a brand new crazy early time of 1pm at the Salmon Street Fountain (I THINK). But anyway this “parade of exes” has it’s own pre-party sort of hilarity that should not be missed.

Plus it is the 45th anniversary of Stonewall and here’s some local lore as well:

Long long ago and far away in 1994, several Portland Lesbian Avengers- lezzies, bulldykes, femmes, and transfolk got together to replicate an event that happened at the March on Washington (DC) 1993- the Dyke March.

It’s been 20 years. And a lot of things have changed. We’re shedding labels, and identifying in new and different ways, but I still believe that Dyke March is hugely important to queer and dyke visibility.

PS While I understand the logistics of the time change I’m less than thrilled. We already have a hard enough time getting our Dyke March in order in this town, people are always confused, lost and wondering if it is happening. It’s always been at 6pm for many years and it feels like we’re getting pushed around. Plus I feel like it’ll be even harder to get people to be up and out in time for 11am. Bad bad decisions all around folks…

Gaylabration

Gaylabration 2014 Poster FINALSometimes you just need a big damn circuit party. This is the classic gay dance vibe but with good Portland peeps, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that.

DJ Tristan Jaxx’s hard-hitting signature brand of visceral house music commands an enthralling blend of deep, pounding sound, larger-than-life vocals and vast & voluminous instrumentals.

Isaiah Esquire is the producer and headliner of the hit bi monthly show Boyeurism, which has always made me swoon. His performance style that is intensely emotive, athletic, and explosive incorporating elements of dance, burlesque, drag, and contortion.

John-Nuriel Yeshua Vissell (Johnny Nuriel) fuses burlesque, belly dance, aerial, and LED together to create unique and vibrant performances, sometimes uniting all four in a single act

Gayme of Thrones Photo Scavenger Hunt

Pride-is-Coming-2

Epic [and we use this word sparingly] drama Game of Thrones returned to our television screens amid exciting promises that this season is to be sexier, bloodier and more gripping than ever. Well here in Portland it will be gayer than ever too! Set in a medieval fantasy Portland, the Gayme of Thrones Photo Scavenger Hunt presents a world of constant war where teams “Houses” of 4-5 battle it out for the iron throne.

Will your house differ from the rest? Perhaps you’ll take the Daenerys Targaryen’s approach, and you hatch your dragon eggs now, so that by June 14th at 1pm they will make you invincible!

Back in our non-magical realm, we need our own visionary dragon kings and queens of the LGBTQ community. Visionaries who recognize that in our state of Oregon despite our recent victory for marriage equality, the lack of social equity for the LGBTQ community still exists, and it is very much real. Your participation in the Gayme of Thrones: 3rd Annual Pride Photo Scavenger Hunt will benefit the Equity Foundation; an organization that funds projects and programs working to create social, economic, and political equity for the LGBTQ community.

Participation in the event is free, so put your houses together, and plan for Portland Pride’s Gayme of Thrones Scavenger Hunt!
How it works
In the 3rd installment of our annual Pride Photo Scavenger Hunt, you and your noble (or not so noble) house of 4-5 people will band together as you race across our great city completing tasks, challenges and feats of bravery (all to be captured on your cellular device) in an all out war of fabulousness as you compete for the crown and everlasting glory.
