This week in photos: BEARTOWN, Sam Adams, and Garage Sale

This is gonna be a busy weekend.

Some bear denizens lounging at BEARTOWN's "Underbear" underwear party.

Just to recap this last week, the bears partied hard, Mayor Sam Adams and newly appointed Police Chief Mike Reese swooped into the Q-Center to announce new measures to bring safety to the queer community, and gays gathered to sell their goods at a bar.

Sam Adams second recall attempt falls short

Sam Adams stays mayor

Sam Adams likes basil and stays mayor.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams has been “in the wars”, as my Mum would say. A little affair with Beau Breedlove turned into a media snowball resulting in two recall attempts and a quasi-political-deadlock for Adams. A few years later, we’re still debating the ins and outs of, ah, the bloom of youth.

The bespectacled politico has been trying hard to get over the [...]

Biggest local news stories of 2009

Sam Adams

Here at qPDX we really do like to have fun. That often means that our coverage is entertainment and event heavy. But 2009 saw plenty of news headlines as well. I’m sure it will come as no surprise to anyone what scandal fills the top spot, but let’s run down 4 more items as well before we repeat the obvious.

5 – Media drama, deaths and rebirths

In the beginning [...]

Mayor Sam Adams gives the highights of 2009 in this year in review video

The general consensus is that 2009 has been a tough year. No one knows that better than the sex scandal embroiled Mayor of Portland Sam Adams. But unlike cynics like Just Out and I, Adams exits the year on a positive video note. Oh, you bouncy bicycling optimists…is it teenage sex that makes you cheery?

Photos from the Gender(Free) For All

Mayor Adams marches at the Gender(Free) For All August 1st

By all accounts I’ve heard so far, Portland’s first independent trans march was a wild success. Though qPDX was not able to make it a Q supporter and friend, Heat Smith, was able to snap a couple good shots (too little too late? Send us more!).

Smith was excited to be next to our intrepid mayor, Sam Adams, and grateful that [...]

Letter from Tom Potter concerning Sam Adams recall campaign

Former mayor Tom Potter with an out of focus current Mayor Adams in the foreground. Oregonian File Photo.

Former Mayor Tom Potter sent a letter to Just Out (ostensibly in order to reach the queer community) addressing his support of the Recall Sam Adams campaign.

To my friends in the sexual and gender minority community:

You may have heard that I am supporting the recall of Mayor Sam Adams. Of all the [...]

More Sam and Beau: Adams recall Breedlove event planning gossip

Jasun Wurster (center) filed a petition to recall Mayor Sam Adams this morning. Attorney Erin Fitzgerald accompanied Wurster as they filed the papers with Andrew Carlstrom, left, of the city auditor's office. Michael Lloyd / The Oregonian

We are a bit slow on the uptake, seeing as it was two days ago that Jasun Wurster, leader of the campaign to recall Mayor Sam Adams, officially filed his paperwork. In our defense [...]

More Beau Breedlove/Sam Adams drama, and this time Beau’s angry…

Every time we think this horrific saga might just end, there’s another wonderful wrinkle. Local station KGW aired an interview with Breedlove wherein the young man expresses anger over more of Sam Adams lying and evasion.

Pride 2009 in review

Sam Adams' bike contingent at Pride 2009

Now that we are all finally recovered from our hangovers it’s time to reflect on the weekend. It was a wild success that saw the gorgeous Miss Sabel Scities win Portland’s Drag Race, 115 floats, thousands of attendees, very few protesters and about a million parties.

Below are my weekend highlights but we really want to hear yours, so comment below!

More Beau Breedlove/Sam Adams drama: phone calls and Willamette Week interview

Oregonian file photo of Sam Adams

This week has produced some updates in the ongoing Mayor Sam Adams/Beau Breedlove inquiry when The Oregonian published a story chronicaling Adams’ 33 phone calls to the underage Breedlove.

Adams’ phone records show he made most of the calls to Breedlove in the weeks after they met in March 2005. Three months later Breedlove turned 18, the age of consent in Oregon. The records don’t [...]
