An Artsy Party this Friday

DJ Permanent Wave, aka Jenny Hoyston at last month's Art Party

Newly launched artfag club night Art Party is back for the third time this Friday the 2nd at Branx (315 SE 3rd). Hosts DJ Gottesfinger and Permanent Wave aim to bring a combination of experimental music and performance art to an often pop music focused club scene. Their solution is to bring their artrock sensibilities to the dancefloor and Friday’s will be a soiree not to be missed.

Noted experimental musicians Tunnels (Nick Bindeman, he of Jackie O Motherfucker and Eternal Tapestral),
and White Rainbow (local stalwart Adam Forkner, he of too many experimental projects to name) will be
performing alongside Sexual Champions, an all improv, all female brass ensemble headed by Jenny Hoyston
(she of Erase Errata, and too many other musical projects to name).

And while I think it might be tough for anyone to get their groove on during improvisational trumpeting it is sure to be mind-bending. Also Kathleen Keough, noted experimental dancer and co-founder of noted dance troupe Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner, will be performing a collaboration with White Rainbow especially for the night.

And then there’s the dance music. Just as riveting, the decks will be stacked with with DJs Magic Beans and Hostile
Tapeover. Beans (Maggie Vail, of Bangs, currently Vice President of seminal PNW independent label
Kill Rock Stars) who will be playing punk, soul, dub, ska, rock, pop, etc., to your heart’s content. She will be joined by Jon Von Appen, aka Hostile Tapeover, who plays tapes from the 80’s, mostly freestyle and pop.

The wallflower aspect will feature, local photographers. local photographers AM O’Malley and Brook Dillon. Though both hail from next door both are also never-before-seen-in-PDX so it should be an exciting new show. O’Malley, also the Outreach Coordinatorat the IPRC, is showing an installation of work exploring relationships. Brook Dillon, who moved here recently from San Francisco, will be showing a suite of portraits. Also in the art room will be a photo portrait booth set up by photographer Lorenzo Triburgo, who last showed his work at Portland Community College and Pushdot Studios.

With so much going on you may scarcely have time to dance or socialize but you will most certainly never be bored. Sounds like an ADD artist’s wet dream to me.

DJ Permanent Wave loves to sit on the lap of Christmas elves

With a dirty name like that, how could you not want to don your mustache, chaps, and prepare for a club night ride? DJs Permanent Wave, Yer Momm and Lucas take over Rotture (315 SE 3rd) tomorrow night and turn it into a Menz Room. But contrary to the more elite boy parties the “men” at this party are sure to be a genderlicious extravaganza.

Dirty masculinity as as a theme to embrace, enjoy, problematize and even make fun of, is emcapsulated perfectly by the bathroom. A traditional meeting place for gay men, it is now a meeting place for gays, lesbians, trans folks and queers of all flavors to congregate in a celebration of the mask of masculinity. And the crew encourages cruising as well as invitations to:

…men of every gender….Tops, Bottoms, Switches…Fags, Femmes, Bears, Daggers, Queens

Yes, I do believe in fairies, and yes, sometimes wet dreams to come true.

Donning a ‘stache of any type will get you in for cheap but a ride is gonna cost ya.

Anyone who is roughly my age and experienced Portland at the height of its dyke rock 90s knows the The Third Sex. Indeed my newly out 14 year old self swooned over the dreamy screamy vocals of Trish Walsh and Peyton Marshall.

For most of the length of their pop punk career I snapped photos, carried around around one of their 2 CDs in my Discman, and, eventually, played a show with them. Commemorated by their track “Maul 10.09.97″ on Back to Go, a final show at a tiny club on 14th and Alberta, back then not the gentrified arts magnet it is now, was one of the most emblematic, not to mention punk rock, Third Sex memories. And this tiny club, with leaking ceiling and cramped stage felt like the beginning of the end of an era.

Sunday night, that era will live again at Rotture (315 SE 3rd Ave).

Joined by drum-bangin’, guitar screeching punk goddesses The Haggard and sweetly crooning Kaia Wilson (Team Dresch, The Butchies) this show should be a grand rebirth of dyke punk. And if I’ve learned anything from the three Team Dresch reunion shows I’ve attended, the girls don’t let this one get away. Whether you were there the first time or only heard stories from your nearing 30s friends, female pheromones are already gearing up for a festival of sweat and joy.

DJ Permanent Wave, aka Jenny Hoyston, will be hosting the jams all night and I’m quite certain and lesbionic dance party will emerge from the rawk. The $5-10 sliding scale, which goes to benefit the Rock’n'roll Camp for Girls, is more than worth it.

The last Fruitcake ever is tonight

DJ Nolita is leaving us!

We all knew that Fruitcake was struggling when it lost its Northeast Portland venue to the lures of medical marijuana, but the final death throes came when founder DJ Nolita announced she was leaving Portland for the wide open sea of San Fran. Not only will she be missed, but so will the insiders night that quickly became a Nopo favorite. Our only consolation? A grand farewell tonight at Portsmouth Pizza (5264 N Lombard).

Tonight’s FREE goodbye bash features Fruitcake mainstays and friendly DJs Freddie Fagula (Fruitcake), Permanent Wave (Casual Encounters, Art Party), Yer Momm (Blowpony) and Gottesfinger (Manic Mondays, Art Party). It’s large venue leaves plenty of space for dancing, mingling, gaming, and even quietly crying or making out in a dark corner.

Even more salacious, and philanthropic to boot, will be the kissing booth to benefit Haiti. All proceeds will go to grassroots relief organizations but if you just want the snoggin’ you won’t be disappointed. Hotties of both the butch and femme persuasion will be available for your lusty lips, and while I don’t know the exact charge, I guarantee it will be worth it.

But don’t wear yourself out too badly, because the reigning queen of the queer dance scene, Blow Pony, is tomorrow. Are your dancing shoes ready for this?

Fruitcake goes all out for All Homo's Eve

Whether you like dressing up in order to explore your faggy sense of fashion, to explore the costumes and the performance on self or just for the silly, scary fun of it all, Halloween is a homo-happy holiday. Here are some of the events you shouldn’t miss. Let the screams begin.

Saturday Oct 24th

Halloween week starts off right with Blow Pony‘s Night of the Living Queens brain draining dance party. Hosted By the Scum queen Artemis Chase with performances by Anna Conda (SF charlie Horse), Glamamore (SF charlie horse), Muthachucka (SF charlie horse), Hoku Mama Swamp (SF charlie Horse), Turleen (SF charlie Horse).

Brain Eating beats by DJs Airick, Kinetic, Yur Momm, Trans Fat, iL Camino, Jodi Bon Jodi, Andy Bearhugger, and a mysterious Special Guest makes for a busy busy night. Ghoul moving, which I can only assume of creepy, sexy cool go go dancing will be provided by Charlie Sharps, Heatherette, Nicoletta and Pony. If you didn’t have shivers already, you will now.

Sunday Oct 25th

The Q Center‘s (4115 N Mississippi) Spooktacular is an afternoon celebration for the kiddies from 2 to 4 that should be entertaining enough for the whole family. With pumpkin carving, caramel apples, a costume contest, face painting, live music and even eerie drag queens (who knew they were so popular with the Duplo set?) it’s bound to be even more family fun than the last Shrek.

Friday Oct 30th

Friday night begins Halloween weekend in earnest, and the gayest kick off events have got to be Homoween with DJs Girlfriends and Automaton at Branx (320 SE 2nd) and HellHouse at Someday Lounge (125 NW 5th). Homoween will be the last stop for Los Angeles bound DJ Automaton, while the pairing with Girlfriends is sure to make a nicely mixed crowd.

I have a feeling though, that the dynamic duo may be eclipsed by former Sissyboy members Church performing HellHouse, a spoof on religious right anti-abortion, anti-gay houses of horror with skit, song, multimedia, and a blur of smeared lipstick and soft-core pornography. Following their 8pm performance is We Got The Meat, Portland’s only all-male Go Gos tribute band.

Saturday Oct 31st

Tabloid at Red Cap

The big night itself starts calmly enough with the Hot Flash Dance Halloween Party 5-9pm at Barracuda (9 NW 2nd Ave) featuring B.B. Dolls onstage singing and go-go’s a-dancing. There will be a contest with prizes for the sexiest and funniest costumes.

Red Cap Garage‘s (1035 SW Stark St) Hallloween party theme this year is Tabloid, a celebration of all things celeb. Fashion yourself as your favorite and win $500 in cash. Prizes for best celebrity costume and also for best overall costume. Be one of the first 100 people down the red carpet and receive a guest gift bag. Be ready though – the paparazzi will be thick! Hosted by MC Adam West as Perez Hilton and renowned DJ Phil B. on the decks until 4am.

Fruitcake at Rumpspankers (700 NE Dekum) is also taking it big, expanding into the Village Ballroom with 2 dancefloors for their All Homo’s Eve party. Gay-famous cover bands that are gonna rock your nostalgic world (Halloween style):

That’s right, hordes of ladies and presumably gentlemen will compete to out gay each other dressed as one of the queerest mainstream performers out there. I love it.

Tit-less, a benefit for Rachel Carns

Rachel Carns, the energetic and effervesant drummer for The Need, the always impeccably dressed with dark yet somehow not completely sinister eye makeup, has been bravely battling breast cancer. And, like most musicians, even Beth Ditto before she became a household name, medical bills from having little or no insurance are piling up.

Living with cancer is stressful enough so the plea for donations on the Need’s website, ““Rachel is surviving cancer. You can help her have a nice rest-of-her-life by donating a little cash-ola to pay back some mega medical bills. Thanks!” is easy to understand. But, though Paypal may be satisfying and easy, a more fun way to show your support will be tonight at a very exciting early benefit show at Liberty Hall (311 N Ivy), 6pm.

The much missed dyke princes of punk, The Haggard are reuniting in support of their friend and will be joined by Northern Swords, The Lovers, Silver Interior (Jenny Hoyston), and Judy. This extensive lineup is a great mix of thrashing guitars and growls, sweet melodic flutes and voices indie rock of all flavors. And to round out the evening there will also be intermittant karaoke, a full bar, and, oh yeah, that warm and fuzzy feeling…

Independence day gay dance parties

Many of us started the patriotic party early with last night’s Delicious but it’s not time to take off those dancing shoes yet because you’ve got 2 days to go. You’ve already been alerted to tonight’s Gaytriotic Gaycation, but July 4th itself also busts out with the new Casual Encounters at Rotture. One of the best parts of this party is the amazing back patio, perfect for Willamette fireworks watching.

Who says that the lady lovin’ ladies don’t also love America? Independence day weekend plays host to two nights of queer patriotic partying. Holocene’s staple, Gaycation, proudly pronounces its Gaytriotic theme Friday, July 3, while newcomer Casual Encounters continues the beat Saturday, July 4.

What began as a laid-back Wednesday night jam has turned into a young dyke’s who’s who. In a town where ephemeral queer nights come and go on the whims of a fickle following, Gaycation has survived its toddler stage to be one of the longest-running dance parties. And it just keeps getting stronger.

The proudly Gaytriotic themed event features special guest DJ Girlfriends along with regulars Mr. Charming and Snowtiger. A special performance by electronic sensation BoyJoy rounds out a particularly hot summer vacation. Seth Gottesdiener, the man behind both DJ Girlfriends and BoyJoy, has been exploding all over town lately, and he’s sure to produce sparks when he belts out his tunes and shimmies over his scorching backup dancers.

The fireworks continue the next day at Rotture, where a brand new night opens its arms to our dance-loving community. Casual Encounters is only in its second showing, but the debut, held a week before Pride, was a wild success. Hosted by Erase Errata’s Jenny Hoyston and joined by DJs Automaton (Limited Edition) and Nolita (Fruitcake), this chill Fourth of July BBQ party will get raucous by the end of the evening.

Calling it a fireworks edition bash is more than just thematic, however. Rotture’s dark and intimate space in the eastside industrial area also features one of the best smoking patios in town. Overlooking the Willamette, it’s the perfect place to catch the city’s fireworks extravaganza. And while I’m unsure if the advertised “BBQ on the back deck” is more of a metaphor, or if there really will be hot dogs grillin’ and red, white and blue beer, it’s bound to feel like a real American independence celebration with a couple hundred of your closest friends.

Rock girls or club boys, the choice is yours

QBoy will be at Crown Room Thursday June 18th

I know we’re all barely recovered from Pride, but tomorrow already sees two great competing nights out.

The queer party at the Crown Room (205 NW 4th), Delicious, has been a laid back dance party sensation for a few months now, but this Thursday the party steps it up with rhymes coming all the way from the UK with a live performance by queer rapper QBoy.

The LGBTQ hip hop movement is starting to gain momentum with acts such as Cazwell, Johnny Dangerous, Lady Sovereign, Scream Club, Katastrophe and Athens Boys Choir. It’s exciting to see us becoming part of a subculture that is often known for its misogyny and homophobia. But the boys and girls are everything in between are starting to really lay down the beats and integrate it into our already thriving dance scene.

QBoy’s anthems are straight up danceable and thumpy, with the nuance of fidget house and electro DJing as well as guest appearances by locals Scream Club.

While his album, Moxie, doesn’t drop until July 13th, you can check out a video for his single, “Coming Out 2 Play,” below.

For the those more into Portland’s long time diet of indie rock, Rotture (315 SE 3rd) is the place to be tomorrow night. A benefit for Portland’s Girls’s Rock Camp, the show features sets from Feelin’ Alright, featuring Kaia Wilson (Team Dresch), Jenny Hoyston (Erase Errata), Katie Davidson (Dear Nora), Dirty Mittens, anaturale and DJ STS.

The legendary Wilson and her sweet syrupy voice can be elusive, though she has done some solo shows lately. But hopefully this new project will truly showcase her raw rock talent as she tears it up with dirty guitar riffs in stark juxtaposition to the vocals. Although the multi-talented Hoyston is sure to add some musically diverse flavor.

And while headliners Feelin’ Alright might have a classic rock vibe, local homo-hopper anaturale and DJ STS will have you jumping just as hard as Delicious, just on the other side of the river.

Dolly Parton may not be an out queer herself (though, believe me, the rumors swirl like an overactive hot tub about Parton and longtime pal Judy Ogle), but she’s always been a champion of gay, lesbian, bi and trans causes.In a musical genre so often dominated by gun-toting good ole boys, the buxom beauty is fearless; she’s even received hate mail and threats for her status as a gay icon. What better way to honor her than to recruit some of Portland’s finest musicians while raising money for a diverse celebration of women in music, Siren Nation. The Dolly Parton Hoot Night cover extravaganza takes place at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) Saturday, June 6.

To make the Hoot truly sing, Celeste Towers – the “Towering Inferno” of Darcelle XV – plays host for this year’s event. Though better known for her uncanny impersonation of another female country star, Wynonna Judd, the Towering Inferno will most certainly inject camp country drag fit for dame Dolly, along with queering her image even further.

The performance lineup is equally impressive. Jen Bernard and Lara Michel (of The Stolen Sweets) will join Susie Blue, Jessica Stiles, Jenny Hoyston, Erin Chambers, Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside, Jean McGowan, Lisa and Her Kin and Rachel Robinson.

The SN crew is particularly excited about former Erase Eratta member Hoyston, a recent Portland transplant. Schooled in punk rock, Hoyston will flesh out an already broad catalog to give it a truly riot grrl vibe.

Parton would be proud.
