Blue Parrot changes hands, still home to queer dance night BENT

I had this foggy notion i went BENT at faggy nation!

It hasn’t been long since the Blue Parrot first fluttered it’s way into many a Portland gay’s party calendar. A little off the beaten track and tucked away pretty far up north, no one could predict that this local neighbourhood bar would turn into the party location motivating deepest SE bound queers (me) to hoof on up north. (Which is kinda the same thing we all said when gay pizza started happening.)

But: The Blue Parrot’s basic charms of queers, gritty music, tons o’dancing, cheap drinks and a little backyard, along with two of the most promising recent gay, lesbian and trans party upstarts, DIRTBAG! and BENT, made this diamond in the rough shine on hard, bright and crazy.

BUT, like VH1′s behind the music, it all came crashing down. The Blue Parrot changed hands and has now been renamed FOGGY NOTION. (not sure if this foggy notion will still be blue on the inside and/or feature parrot decorations. I kinda hope it does!). DIRTBAG decided to move on up (or down, as the case may be) to a new destination, namely THE KNOW on Alberta and 20th. BENT, however, decided to stay put and play an encore, even though we didn’t get to clap yet. Go BENT.

So, you know what to do, go to BENT at the BLUE PARROT/FOGGY NOTION on July 9th and every 2nd Friday, and make sure it lives up to it’s new nickname (thx to Jose!) which, of course, has to be FAGGY NATION.

GAYCATION turns 4!

One of Portland’s favourite queer nights, gaycation, is turning an amazing, post toddleresque total of 4 years old! Given the short lifespan of queer nights in this city, we’re very happy that Gay Cay is around and going stronger ever.

Come celebrate with Mr Charming, DJ Snowtiger and special guest KIM ANN FOXMAN (of Hercules & Love Affair). Expect tunes that will keep you on the dancefloor, wall to wall cute people of every gender and style, strong drinks (even though they can take a while to get, it’s true) and some of the best queer party atmosphere in town.

Cheap as chips as always w/ still only a $5 sacrifice at the door.

21+/9pm till when they turn on the lights.

Come out and shake your tailfeather with some queer girls (and other fine people)! DJ Nolita and Chelsea Starr will be on the decks, and there will be a signature $3 cocktail until 11pm.

The best way to beat this windy cold weather is to come out and have a dance! See you there.

This is truly a special GayCay, featuring DJ’s Snowtiger and Mr. Charming, along with up-and-coming pop hunks BOYJOY. We love BOYJOY since we first saw them at the Athens Boys Choir gig @ Dunes! One third of BOYJOY, DJ Girlfriends (Portland Is Burning, Fruitcake, Rotture, Lubejob, Ascension…this whole fucking town, basically) will also be rocking the decks with his trademark mix of oldskool dance and fresh ‘tude. He’s getting hotter every week and I love he played Adonis’ “No way Back” at Rumpspankers, as well as Pump up the Jam. Just sayin’

Double Down makes for a nice pillow too, ha!

Another opportunity to have a ruckus good time this weekend is to head to Holocene on Saturday night for Double Down, which will no doubt be the gathering place for everyone who didn’t head out to Seattle or San Francisco! $5, DJ’s and dancing, drinks and debauchery.

This past weekend saw a stretch of intense partying for at least 2/3rds of your QPDX crew, so pardon us while we recover momentarily and start summing all of this weekend’s great events for you! Starting off the night on Friday was Portland’s newest lesbian dance night-CRAVE.

Crave - Monthly lesbian dance party at Crush

I had a chance to stop by on Friday and speak with some of the organizers, dancers and partiers in attendance, and if the clubgoers satisfaction is the best gauge of a party, then Crave is already a hit. Held at one of my favourite bars in Portland, Crush, Crave is a “stylish, fashionable, hip, themed dance party with lovely, sexy ladies, geared towards the 21-40 crowd who appreciate beautiful women”, according to organizer Mirage. And while the stated upper age limit of 40 is a bit high (I barely saw anybody into their 30’s), Crave delivers on the promise of themed nights, pumping dance music and enthusiastic dancers. “It’s a great party,” dancer Piper told me outside, “everyone is having fun, getting down. I love the vibe, it’s awesome”, and party attendees I spoke to echoed the same sentiments. “The music is pumpin,” my friend Byz said, ” The girls are hot, the drinks keep coming, it’s awesome.”

Last Friday’s theme was “Wet”, featuring lube wrestling (which was more like a lube performance, but still fun to watch) and powerful squirt guns…the power of which I experienced first hand when some young whippersnapper shot me in the ear! But a speedy beer from the lovely barstaff helped (hello, you! <3), and the hot atmosphere in the club did the rest. People were getting down on the floor and definitely enjoying their night, and even though the door price of $7 is probably the spendiest in Portland for a re-occurring lesbian night, Crave was almost pushing at the upper limit of Crush’s capacity, with 250 people filling the 300 person space. Crave is certainly geared more towards the trendier lesbian crowd in Portland, and may be too young and too hip for some, but it’s good to see some competition shake up the stale old E-Room-and-Holocene circuit that has been persisting in Portland for the last few years. Despite its success, the event is unlikely to move or go bi-monthly just yet. “We love Crush,” Mirage gushes, “It’s a great venue with a great atmosphere. We’re the only event in town that is themed this way from month to month, and draws the kinds of crowds that we do, and if people have to get hear early to get in and join the fun, so be it.” So be it then. It seems like PDX lesbians already have a Crush on Crave!
