“Things We Carry”
The concept for this show is partially inspired by a short story, ‘The Things They Carried’, by American author Tim O’Brien. In the Vietnam-based story, the characters are soldiers whose personal stories resonate from the physical items they carry with them, items that often remind them of emotional ties, family and home. In the face of death during wartime, these articles become almost like totems to the soldiers. Talismans protecting them like little angels.
We all carry things with us throughout our lives, mostly as memories that evolve, change and fade over time. Often there is a lonely shoe box somewhere that contains small items, photos, or trinkets that will forever link us to feelings, experiences, and people we’ve known. This makes them irreplaceable. And to us, that is why we keep them, why they are significant, and why we both chose to share the “things we carry” with you, the viewer.
