Roy Ashburn comes out, but now what?
Complete and utter tosser California state Senator Roy Washburn has now officially come out, several gay news websites along with mainstream media report.
Roy Ashburn, a republican politician and classic victim of internalized homophobia that ends up fucking things up for everyone else, spent the last several years voting against Harvey Milk day, anti-gay bullying initiatives, gay marriage, and apparently even organized an anti gay-marriage rally. Oh and he’s from California, that lovely prop-8 state.
A few days ago he was booked by the cops after driving around drunk in his state-issued SUV, coming from a gay bar called Faces and with a gay guy in the passenger seat. Smart move.
Now what? I don’t think gays and lesbians will ever accept Ashburn into the fold. Maybe the Log Cabin’s want him?
Some video under the cut.

This is the album I bought the first time I ever skipped school in 6th grade. This is also what you should be wearing tomorrow...
Coco’s 90s inspired dance party Snap! at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison) has always been queer friendly. They even had a crossover party with Double Down called Double Snap! last spring. But local queers have become used to having a party thrown in our honor almost every day, and with few options for a coveted Friday night we are forced to make our own fun.
That’s why tomorrow, we’re taking over the Homocene.

Breaking news! David Letterman isn't very funny
UPDATED – see bottom
…except this time the person he’s ragging on is Amanda Simpson, who was appointed by President Obama to the U.S. Commerce Department. Queers United, a fellow blog, reports that Letterman shows a picture of Simpson on his show, and then an audience refers to her as someone who used to be “a dude” and infers a sexual relationship with Ms. Simpson before running off in disgust.

Italy to open trans only prison The BBC reported today that Italy has made plans to open a prison dedicated solely to housing trans identified inmates. The former medium security women’s prison will house up to 30 people, even though approximately 60 transgendered people are interred in other Italian prisons total, which may mean that more transgendered prisons will be opened across Italy in the future.

 Amanda Simpson
Amanda Simpson is being called the first America’s first openly transgender presidential appointee in the the job she starts Tuesday as the Senior Technical Advisor in U.S. Commerce Department.
Reluctant to be the first, Simpson knew there would be issues, despite her exceptional qualifications for the job. And indeed, anti-gay leader Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans For Truth, asked, “Is there going to be a transgender quota now in the Obama administration? “How far does this politics of gay and transgender activism go? Clearly this is an administration that is pandering to the gay lobby.”

Mary Glasspool, pictured, would be the first openly gay bishop to be consecrated since Gene Robinson Photo: AFP/GETTY
Today the second openly gay Bishop was appointed to the Anglican Church.
This time Los Angeles Episcopalian church elected 55-year-old lesbian Reverend Mary Douglas Glasspool as assistant bishop on the weekend. Despite the appointment, she still needs a majority of the National Episcopal Church to formally approve the position. If this does happen she will be the first lesbian Bishop.
The election of Gene Robinson five years ago as the first gay bishop in the US caused deep rifts in the Anglican Church and a split is feared now as well.

 STR8's the only way, apparently
A brand of cologne called “STR8″ as been fluttering around the internet for a little while – complete with seemingly homophobic tagline: “STR8. There’s no other way”
What is this? The work of another group of religious nuts? Scientology side-income? No – seems like a hungarian/polish perfume company making a quick buck on the back of good-old american wistfulness for the great beyond.

In a strange twist of circumstances, a heterosexual couple interested in obtaining a civil union in the UK has been barred from doing so. The reason? Civil unions are only for gay people. Heteros can only be “married” and only by a member of a church. The couple is supported by Peter Thatchell, one of the UK’s most prominent gay rights activists.

A heterosexual couple have been refused permission to register for a civil partnership.
Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle said they want to challenge “discriminatory” UK laws which restrict civil partnerships to same-sex couples. They plan legal action after their application was denied at Islington Register Office, north London.
A spokesman for Islington Council said the pair’s request was refused because “the council must follow the law”.
UK law only permits heterosexual couples to marry and only permits same-sex couples to form civil partnerships.
