It’s a beautiful equation. You fill your expansive queer stomach with delicious eats from one (or as many as possible) of over 75 dining establishments across the state and in turn, Basic Rights Oregon receives 15% of the proceeds. Easy, right? Bites for Rights is in its 10th year, marriage is a hot, hot issue and the cupcakes are still warm, so head to your local eatery (complete list of participating establishments can be found here. ) and indulge.
Here’s my list of recommended eateries, published in the most recent Just Out. Full article can be found here.
Portland
Byways Cafe
1212 NW Glisan St., 503-221-0011
Start out with the world’s best oatmeal and blue corn pancakes topped with pecan butter — and the chance to run into BRO Executive Director Jeana Frazzini.
Cupcake Jones
307 NW 10th Ave., 503-334-4404
Apart from being a longtime Red Dress Party and Our House donor, the confectionary joint also contributes 5 percent of every Tuesday’s proceeds to a local nonprofit and gives away all surplus cupcakes to Blanchet House. The cupcakes are so good, they may very well send you into a food coma.
Russell Street Bar-B-Que
325 NE Russell St., 503-528-8224
Put on your cowboy boots, order the pulled-pork platter, creamy goodness mac-and-cheese and chocolate deep-fried pie. Wash it all down with a pint of local brew, snap your fingers twice, and you might find yourself with a newfound accent and an affinity for rusted pick-up trucks.
Eugene
Sweet Life Patisserie
755 Monroe St., 541-683-5676
Drive down to Eugene for an orgasm in your mouth. Actually, the sweets are so rich you should probably just run there.
Ashland
Pangea Grills and Wraps
272 E Main St., 541-552-1630
Best soup. Ever. I had the carrot curry ginger soup on my way home from a long, wintry road trip and was instantly in my mother’s kitchen, warming my hands on soup steam.
